PIMJ: Notes and Contentment...

For today's Peek Inside My Journal post, I thought I'd share the notes I took on Sunday at the youth service. This was actually the second time I had heard this sermon and it hit me in a totally different way this time.
The sermon was on Philippians 4:10-20 and focused on contentment.

(Just a note, these are not all my words. A lot of this is notes from the sermon, and occasionally a thought that was stemmed from what was being said. One of the reasons I decided to post this is because there were a lot of searching questions that stemmed from this sermon. You can see them and read most of my answers.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Philippians 4:11) = "content" - Not lacking a necessary resource. Other writers have described this word by comparing a person to a city...say a port city. There are things coming into that port to help support and sustain the city and there are exports going out of it. The city is dependent upon the imports to survive. However, Paul is saying that he has learned how to be content with whatever he already has even given in life by God with out needing to rely on all these "imports" into his life.

What imports am I dependent on in my life?
  • Time with Travis
  • Facebook?
  • My phone
  • Books
  • Food - Good Food
  • Car = Freedom = Social Interactions
What was Paul dependent on that made him content without external imports?
  • Jesus Christ living inside him
"He who had God and many other things has no more than he who has God and God alone." - C.S. Lewis

- I need to repent of covetousness and seek God as my only sustenance...my only "import".

(Philippians 4:16) = The people of Philipi saw themselves as part of the solution the the "problems" Paul was in.

Do I see myself as part of the solution to "problems" God has shown to me in life?
What "problems" has God revealed to me in the world or in lives of others around me?
Am I a part of the solution to these problems? Or am I a part of the problem, if only by simply doing nothing?

(Philippians 4:18) = Our worship does not ADD to God's glory in any way. He does not need our worship in order to be glorious. He made us and we are His! However, our worship is pleasing to Him.
Our worship RECOGNIZES His glory, and that is pleasing to Him.

"Either you worship money or you worship God WITH your money." - Mark Driscoll

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The big challenge for me in this sermon was to place my dependence on GOD completely. There are SO, SO many things in my life fighting for my attention and worship...but when I placed my faith in Jesus, He sent  His Holy Spirit to live inside me and that is ALL I need to be joyful and content.
I know that this will be the battle I fight every day for the rest of my life...yet ironically enough, I will only experience victories when I allow Jesus and His Spirit to do the work in me. Such a paradox and I don't fully understand it...but it is SO beautiful and it is so freeing.

All I have to do is surrender...

Be blessed.

Good

I work at a pool.
I am a lifeguard.
I teach swimming lessons.
I teach water aerobics classes.
I (occasionally) bond with a certain patron, child, or family.

There is one godly christian couple that I have had the privilege to know through my work. I taught their son swim lessons several times and their daughter once or twice.

I had not seen then in quite awhile, until today. They came in for free swim and I got to talk to both parents a bit.

But why am I writing about this?

Well, something from the very beginning of our conversation stuck out to. The father walked up, said hi, and asked how I was. I replied that I was good and asked him how he was...his answer struck me.

"Better than I deserve. Blessed beyond measure. God is good, all the time."

I wish I had that attitude more...

HE IS GOOD! I should rejoice in that fact daily!

I notice that as I spend more time in God's Word, in singing worship songs, and in prayer the more my heart is inclined to see God's goodness even in the darkest circumstances. I found my self singing this song as he walked away a minute later. Old...but so true!

Join me as I seek to rejoice in His goodness day-by-day, minute-by-minute.

Be blessed.

PIMJ: The Word of God

Hello Lovelies!

Today I am going to share something that has really been on my heart lately.
The importance of God's Word.

As some of you may know, 27 days ago a group of Christian women online decided to keep each other accountable to reading God's Word daily. How did they do this?

They picked a reading plan from the YouVersion Bible app and created a hashtag so they could tweet, blog, instagram, etc about what truths God had been teaching them through His Word and have it easily visible and searchable.

That hashtag is #SheReadsTruth

They would have never imagined what happened next. Dozens of other Christian women and men joined in. Dozens of Christians were looking for effect accountability and community. The SheReadsTruth community was what they needed.

I personally found out about this and joined in on Day 6 (although I started back at Day 1 and caught up) of the Soul Detox reading plan. I have struggled for years trying to be more consistent in reading my Bible. I knew it was important, but only recently did I really understand WHY it was so important.

Do you ever have those moments where you feel like God is drilling something into your life? Like He is on repeat, telling you the same thing over and over in al sorts of ways and contexts?

I feel that way often.
Right now, He is telling me how important it is to spend time with Him IN HIS WORD.

How has He been telling me this?

First, through seeing the #SheReadsTruth community formed. I was reading God's word, but only once or twice a week and I was really struggling to figure out how to digest it…to take it in. I started following along with #SheReadsTruth and found that it only took about 10 minutes to read through the devotion and the text as well as spending a minute or so thinking about what I had read and tweeting a few thoughts. But was this really enough?

It was just becoming another reading routine…
It was not alive…
It was not changing my life…

Then I began to see the instagram photos of the other #SheReadsTruth women. There were journal pages filled to the brim with thoughts and notes and prayers. I KNOW that something happens and I am freed to go much deeper when I take the time to write, to digest my life through putting words on a page.  I KNOW that we are supposed to meditate on God's Word, to digest it and allow it to sink into our HEARTS instead of only our minds.

But I justified…"I don't have anything to write about these passages. That works for journaling my life, not reading the bible. Aren't truly spiritual people just supposed to read it and pray?"

But as I finally let go and began to write, even the most basic of thoughts…even just copying a verse, thoughts began flowing through my pencil. Questions began to flow through my mind.

Not "yes and no" questions, but gut-wrenching, soul-searching questions. I wrote them down and had to make a choice…

Would I be brutally honest and write the answers to these questions or would I think answers in my head and then dismiss them…I began to write…

I don't like what I see on those pages.
I don't like the sin that is revealed.
I don't like the me that I see.

But it is truth.
It is what God is teaching me.
It is what He needs to work in and through my heart.

…Sunday a church, each of the graduating seniors in our youth group got up and shared a few minutes of advice. Of what they had learned.
ALMOST.EVERY.SINGLE.ONE said read your Bible. Sigh…that's what I said during MY senior advice 3 years ago.
One girl in particular put a slightly different twist on it…she talked about developing a "history" with God.  Have a past with God that you can look back to and say, "See. He is faithful. He has done all this. I know I can trust Him because I have seen Him be faithful in the past."
It is SO true.

I have a "past" with God that I am so thankful for.
I can look back at numerous times when He has been faithful to me.
I can recall time after time that He has worked in my life for good.

But I don't want my past to stop now. I want to go deeper! I want to have a history with God unlike any other!  I want to know Him INTIMATELY. I want to trust Him COMPLETELY.

Finally, last week on a run, I listened to this sermon on the POWER of the Word of God.
It is only 40 minutes long.  I strongly encourage you to listen to it. Your faith with be built. Your desire to spend time in God's Word will be refreshed. And most importantly, your reasons for spending time in God's Word, will be radically changed.

In this sermon, Britt Merrick goes through 20 Things the Word of God is Powerful For, backing each one with scripture itself.

I hope these truths can bless you as they have blessed me!

Be blessed.

PIMJ - Declaration of Dependence

Some of you may remember this tweet and instagram photo.

Yep…my hubby and I like Steven Curtis Chapman.  He is a phenomenal song writer.  I am seriously in awe of his ability to put words together in a lyrical way (sounds so simple doesn't it).  He gets across the most AMAZING messages in his song.

This post is going to kill two birds with one stone! Oh yeah!  (Wait…is that politically correct to say anymore? Oh well.)

You get a photo dump of all my flower photos from around our neighborhood AND you get a peek inside my journal!

Why the song with pictures of flowers? Well, listen to the words of the first verse.

Is it hard for you to admit your need for help? It is for me.
Is it hard for you to admit you sin…even to God?  It is for me.
Is it hard for you to stop trusting in yourself and starting trusting in God? It is for me.

A typical journal entry for me includes me crying out to God for help in this area. I constantly am asking Him to help me to surrender in one area of my life or another.

So join me, will you? Join me in my Declaration of Dependence on the finished work of Jesus Christ!

Be blessed and link up posts that take a peek inside your heart (aka. journal).

Peek Inside My Journal: The Gardener

How many of you like gardening?
I like the thought of gardening, but I usually don't like the every day work of watering...or weeding.
My mom and sister love to garden.  And they do a beautiful job at it!

I was reading Isaiah awhile ago, and I noticed that (in chapter 62) God is compared to a Gardner.

How beautiful is that?
I get this picture in my mind of God gently bending down and tending us...His eyes smile down with joy on each new leaf or bud.  His tender hands gently guide us to toward His light.  His nail scarred hands firmly and patiently pluck the weeds out of our lives that so stubbornly insist on growing.  He allows the rain, but just enough to keep us growing, not so much that we drown.  Everything He does in His garden is for the good of the plants...

Does your mind work like this?  Turning thoughts into pictures and pictures into words or poetry?

Have you ever seen a truly AMAZING garden?  Does it not just leave you in awe (with a wee bit of jealousy)?
I love looking at and admiring beautiful gardens.
When I do, one of the first thoughts that runs through my head is "Who is the gardener?  He/she did an amazing job."

Beautiful and fruitful gardens bring glory to the gardener!

If we are God's "planting", then what do our lives tell about our Gardener?

Does my life point to a loving Master Gardner?

It is my heart's desire that when people watch my life, they would see the beauty of it and tribute all the praise to God.

This truly is the good and perfect work that God has called us to...to bring Him glory!

I am praying that my life will bring glory to Jesus.

Link up your Peek Inside My Journal posts below! I am looking forward to reading them!

Peek Inside My Journal: Going Bad

Do you ever have deep thoughts inspired by random things? I do.

Yes, this is a partially eaten avocado.

We used a few slices for dinner last night when we had my mom and brothers eating with us. I was just going to throw the last bit away, because...you know...they get all brown and nasty looking.
But my mom stopped me and informed me that if you keep the pit in with it, the avocado pit will keep the rest of the avocado from going bad..
Did you know that? I didn't!

And guess what, it worked! An I had this awesome (GREEN) avocado to put on my sandwich today! =D

It made me think...just like the avocado needs the pit to stay close in order for it not to go bad, we need to stay close to God in order for our lives to not to go bad. There is a saying, "If you aren't moving forward (in your walk with God), then you are moving back." SO TRUE! I need to stay close to my source of life...JESUS! If I don't, I will end up like a brown, slimy day-old avocado. I may not Ben realize that I had become dead and a "stench" to my Maker instead of a "sweet smelling perfume".

"Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor." (Ecclesiastes 10:1 ESV)
